Alabama Shakes

Once in while we are fortunate to stumble into something grand, a song that transport us there where we need to be, a voice that guide us through this trip, a new artist that convince us after a couple of songs, music that we enjoy from the get go.

Alabama Shakes is the name of a young quartet from Athens, Alabama that is quickly getting attention after their self-titled debut EP in 2011. Alabama Shakes' style is above all powerful, strong and energetic. Brittany Howard's powerful voice embellish their music, blending solid rock with deep soul, country, and blues. Howard’s vocals are so powerful that have already been compared to those of major artists such as Janis Joplin and Otis Redding…yes, no kidding.

The band is planning to release an album entitled "Boys and Girls" on April 9-10, which without a doubt would consolidate them as one of the most important bands to follow this year.

PORCELAIN RAFT | Strange Weekend

Otro buen disco iniciando el año, el debut de Porcelain Raft, proyecto del compositor italiano Mauro Remiddi, firmado por Secretly Canadian, disquera que se encargará del lanzamiento de "Strange Weekend" el próximo 24 de Enero.

Grabado en un pequeño sótano en Brooklyn (siempre Brooklyn!) Remiddi nos regala esta obra de Dream Pop que definitivo vale mucho la pena. Por alguna razón el track seleccionado como primer sencillo es el que menos me gusta ("Put Me to Sleep"), así que les dejo el vid oficial del mismo, audios de otras piezas, el stream completo del álbum al final, vía Hype Machine, y dos tracks para descargar desde su disquera. Entren al profile del artista en Secretly Canadian, la bio que reseñan ahí del disco y de su autor está interesante... enjoy!

Nada Surf - "The Stars are Indifferent to Astronomy"

Son ya 20 años de carrera de Nada Surf, y los Neoyorquinos lo celebran con su séptimo álbum de estudio, disponible a la venta a partir del 24 de Enero. Para todos los que únicamente conocen "Popular", esta banda es definitivo mucho más y tienen a lo largo de su carrera varias joyas como "Let The Fight do The Fighting", mi track favorito de este nuevo disco, y mi track favorito en lo que va del año.

Delay Trees, a band and album we missed in 2011.

The beginning of a year brings hope and excitement for new music. Here at MUSICAL SOULMATE, we move fast and we try to bring your attention to new things, ranging from emerging and new artists to new material from some of our favorites. January however is always the month of disappointment, especially when we stumble into music that we totally missed for the past 12 months…at the same time though, January represents an opportunity to go back and rephrase the year that passed or at least to try to catch up with the inherently fast pace of music.

Last year, The Delay Trees released their self-titled album in the US. We totally missed it…The band from the southern part of Finland (Helsinki and Hammenlina) offers a delightful orchestral pop sound, similar to what we have heard recently from other European bands that have move to the top of our lists. Some of the tracks in the album remind us of Stornoway and Fanfarlo. The Delay Trees, however, add enchanting arrangements that expand their 80’s pop approach even beyond what we've heard from other Nordic bands like Shout Out Louds.

The album contains 10-tracks and opens with “Gold”, an epic and elegant ballad that proves the potential of the Finnish quartet led by Rami Vierula. To this, songs like “Cassette 2012”, “Tarantula/Holding on” and “Pattern” join to create a beautiful, solid album that WE SHOULD NOT HAVE MISSED.

The band released another 5-track EP entitled “Before I Go Go”, which in fact can be downloaded for free at The Delay Trees website.

Exercise Your Music Muscle

Algunos dicen que los viernes son de clásicos, así que aprovecharé esto para recordar la campaña que lanzó Virgin en 2007 "Exercise You Music Muscle" y que nos mantuvo entretenidos por bastante tiempo.
Dicha campaña consistía en un print y un video que justamente retaban nuestros conocimientos musicales, la idea es relacionar las imágenes que vemos para poder encontrar su significado y saber a que banda o músico están haciendo referencia.

Hasta ahora nosotros hemos encontrado 70 pero dicen que pueden ser más, así que es hora de ejercitarse!!!

Fanfarlo's second album, Rooms Filled With Light, comes out February 28th on Atlantic Records.

Sharon Van Etten - "Tramp"

El día de ayer Sharon Van Etten, chica de Brooklyn, New York, una de las nuevas consentidas de esa prolífica escena local, tuvo su debut televisivo en el programa de Jimmy Fallon. Su tercer álbum de estudio "Tramp" será editado por Jagjaguwar, famosa disquera hoy en día gracias al éxito mundial de Bon Iver, y saldrá a la venta el 7 de Febrero en todos los formatos. El álbum fue grabado en el estudio de uno de los gemelos Dessner (Aaron) de The National (el primer sencillo suena justo a eso, a The National con vocalista femenina) y contará con colaboraciones increíbles, como Bryce Dessner, Zach Condon (Beirut), Matt Barrick (The Walkmen), Jenn Wasner (Wye Oak), etc.

Poliça - Give You The Ghost

Desde Minneapolis, encabezados por Channy Casselle ex Roma di Luna y miembros de Gayngs, Vampire Hands y la versión extendida de Bon Iver nos llega uno de los primeros discos "sorpresa" del año. Poliça logra en su "Give You The Ghost" un LP con once tracks geniales que viene a consolidar todo el ruido y las expectativas que generaron a finales del año pasado en la escena local de las famosas "Twin Cities".

El disco sale a la venta de manera formal el 14 de Febrero, editado por -Totally Gross National Product- sin embargo hubo una venta especial con motivo de la época Navideña en iTunes y Amazon en donde se pudo adquirir en formato digital.

Próximos Lanzamientos Q1

Después del trabajo que costo hacer la lista con los discos que más gustaron a lo largo de este 2011 y vivir todas esas grandes anécdotas y momentos que nos marcaron mientras escuchábamos cada track hay que detenernos y voltear a ver lo que se viene.
Para esto la revista Pitchfork por medio de su plataforma digital pitchfork.com nos da una guía/lista con lo que podemos esperar de nuevos lanzamientos para los primeros meses de este 2012. Es una lista muy variada y hecha con base a los lanzamientos en Norteamérica con ciertas excepciones debido a la popularidad del artista.
En lo particular ya estoy ansioso por escuchar los siguientes:
